Every morning, in the staff meeting of the Listin Diario, we take an obligated look at the readership data, which allows us to appreciate which have been, amongst our users, the most viewed news of the day.
We do this to measure how impactful the news or contents published on our printed newspapers or in our digital platform have been, with the purpose of forming an idea of the meaning of these preferences and the need to fertilize from new angles to achieve a more sustainable “hook” from the readers over time.
Naturally, we do not strictly subordinate ourselves to these indicators but, within the framework of our short, medium and long-term predictions, we keep working on the topics that the staff team has reviewed and considered deserving of our most careful attention.
We are not surprised either, if after calculating or predicting that some of the contents in the newspapers would be the most read that day, the reality ends up being that the metrics reveals us the opposite.
The two executives who, each morning, are engaged in offering us the panorama of our readership as a journalistic company, are Juan E. Thomas and Coralis Orbe. I have invited them to summarize their perceptions of what our users read most.
“There is an interesting factor when analyzing the metrics of entries and behaviors in our news digital portal: the audience shows certain apathy towards the political issues, though they express themselves with little interaction in our social media and in our website. It might be because the Dominican Republic came out of an intense political process in 2016 and now goes through, in theory, a stage of little interest from the audience.
This does not mean, in any way, that the newspapers should change or adjust their information production schemes because, as it’s known, there will always be important and outstanding news to cover and publish, even if they do not lean in favor of the readership, as in the biggest scales.
Tastes and preferences are difficult concepts to define in this scheme, since it is very common that one day the news with the greatest reading interest are nationals or very “concerning” news, and then the next day we find a decanting towards entertainment or more “unconcerning” content”.
And this is what Coralis tells us:
“The behavior of the audience in front of a news event published on the web is more complex than it seems, since some of the contents considered as “severe”, in a journalistic way, do not get to be the most read nor do those that manage to get the most repercussive reactions or comments in the social media.
Of the news considered as “severe”, those of greater readership are those that directly affect the user, human stories, such as some of the shocking events that are in development or revision but unclear, for example: a case of justice that is in the fore and has previously provoked a lot of users’ reactions and engagement in the social media, is almost certain to fall under the most read next, since every single bit of information that is published overtime about such process, attracts plenty of interest.
However, there are also cases of events that are in development, such as the approval of laws, which until the final outcome of that event is published, the behavior of the audience is timid.
Another phenomenon that we have also observed about the digital readers is that the topics that have the greatest readership on our webpage are not necessarily the ones that get the most comments or are the most shared around social media”.
As you can see, the daily news logbook has been a good tool for us, it allows us to navigate the digital ocean with more security to reach safe ports.
